After having delved into the recent controversy that led NFT platform RTFKT's Monolith 2 collection to drop from an estimated $42 million (combined floor price) to an underwhelming $4.3 million. We started our morning with the question, what kind of "art" retains and generates the most value, in other words, what the hell should we be investing in? Two big names were mentioned, CloneX and Banksy.

Here's some facts 👉 in 2022, RTFKT did $1.29 billion in sales, including $92 million in royalties — in secondary/resale volume prior to the NIKE acquisition. Meanwhile, owning a physical piece of art from Banksy got everyday investors 32% returns. According to Masterworks, the fine-art investing platform reported the last 8 exits, the last 3 realizing +13.9%, +17.8%, and +21.5% net returns even while financial markets plummeted. FYI, the last Banksy piece sold for around $18.5 million, compared to the total CloneX collection currently valued at a combined $156 million. Does it really matter if it's "art" or not? The value of art remains intrinsic and subjective, but the question remains, what defines real utility?
